In the plains of Texas, he crosses paths with Johanna (Helena Zengel), a ten-year-old girl who was accepted and raised as his own by the people of Kiowa six years earlier. Johanna, hostile to a world she has never known, returns against her will to her biological aunt and uncle. Kidd agrees to deliver the child where the law says it is his. As they journey hundreds of miles through the relentless wilderness, they will both face immense challenges from human and natural forces as they search for a place that anyone can call home.
